The Brazilian national team player announced at dawn on Monday his retirement from international football, after the Brazilian national team's World Cup journey was halted at the eighth-final stage after losing to Norway 1-2.
Neymar said in a brief statement to a journalist from the Brazilian TV Globo channel: "I tried and tried. Now, it's over. Things started here and end here."
With these words, the 34-year-old concluded his 16-year career, during which he scored 80 goals and made 59 assists in 130 international matches.
The veteran star will bid farewell to his country's national team as the second player who participated most in the Brazilian jersey, and the all-time top scorer, ahead of the late legend Pele.
